Weekend Camp for Gifted and Talented Children

The Australian Gifted Support Centre are now taking enrolments for our first ever Weekend Camp for gifted and talented children in Victoria. For the past 20 years I have been running these camps in NSW and ACT for the NSWAGTC and am excited to be able to bring them to Victoria.

VAGTC Responds to Australian Curriculum

The VAGTC recently submitted a response to an ACARA update on “Special Education Needs” and “Diversity of Learners” to request that gifted and talented education be acknowledged in the Australian Curriculum. The VAGTC urged ACARA to consider the need for gifted and talented students and for this subset of learners to be accommodated for in the Australian Curriculum.

Mentoring Makes a Difference!

The VAGTC recently hosted two twilight seminars on mentoring. The seminars, “Mentoring: Does it Make a Difference” were facilitated by Christine Ireland, Mark Smith and Susan Knopfelmacher. All three educators are experienced in facilitating mentorships for gifted and talented students and shared valuable information with the seminar participants.

Victorian Inquiry into the Education of Gifted and Talented Students

On March 23 this year, the Education and Training Committee of the Victorian Parliament announced a call for public input into a review of educational programs targeting gifted and talented school students. In a media release titled “Supporting gifted and talented students to shine” Committee Chair, Mr David Southwick MP, said, “Giftedness and talent may take various forms, and is not just limited to academic achievements. Students may be gifted in areas relating to art, music, sport or interpersonal skills.”  He continued to state that, “Under this broad definition between 3 and 15 per cent of the population is considered to be gifted.”

Gagne talks about Talent Development

On 31 August 2010 Francois Gagne spoke at an event organised and sponsored by the Student Services Department of the Catholic Education Office, Melbourne. Michael Bond attended this event and wrote the following thoughts about Gagne's talk...

“Talent development is bringing high potential into high achievement”

In August last year I sat in a lecture theatre in Melbourne and soaked up as much as I could about giftedness. I was listening to Professor Gagne sharing his knowledge about this field. For some twenty-five years he has been one of the leading researchers and advocates of this field of education. I felt somewhat humbled to be in the room and privileged to be listening to his thoughts and opinions.
