Giftedness and the Autism Spectrum

The Gifted Support Network presents:

Susan Wade BA(Hons), GradDipEd(Sec), MEd(GiftedEd)

Autism Spectrum Conditions such as Asperger’s syndrome (AS) are diagnosed in individuals with a wide range of abilities, including those who are gifted. While there is a growing body of knowledge available to educators and parents about AS, there has been relatively little research in relation to educational provision for gifted children with AS. Susan will examine the available literature and introduce case studies of gifted individuals with AS.

The seminar will focus on:

  • differentiating characteristics of AS from those of giftedness,
  • understanding the unique strengths and weaknesses of individuals who are both gifted and have AS, and
  • providing appropriate support at home and school.

Susan will highlight the importance of both parent and teacher roles in assisting these ‘twiceexceptional’ learners.

Susan is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr. Leonie Kronborg in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. Her research focuses on gifted individuals on the Autism Spectrum. She is also an experienced secondary teacher and mother of a ‘twice-exceptional’ child with Asperger’s syndrome. Susan was awarded the Monash University / Herald Sun Victorian Graduate Teacher of the Year in 1999 and an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) in 2010.

No prior knowledge expected.
School personnel and parents are encouraged to attend.
